Guest in Focus: Kohei SANADA – Icarus and the Son

In our next in the Guest in Focus series, we learn a bit more about the director of one of the short films being shown in our Tokyo University of the Arts: Shorts section; Kohei SANADA, writer and director of Icarus and the Son.

When and how did you first get into filmmaking?

When I was 18 I entered university to study art. While creating experimental film projects, I naturally started creating films with a story.

What were your first film projects?

It was a 15-minute-long film about a man and a woman on drugs. Waking up in the morning, he finds himself buried into a field, only the face out of the ground, while the woman is stuffing bread into his mouth. Without exception the personification of  self‐consciousness.

Where did you get the idea for Icarus and the Son, and what story would you like it to tell?

Talking with the producer about the project, I thought I could write a good story about a good-for-nothing father. That’s where it started. The strangeness of someone who really wants to do something but cannot do it openly and honestly.

Were there any funny or difficult situations you experienced during the shooting?

Katsumi Yanagishima was doing the filming (cameraman for Takeshi Kitano and many others) – an absolute professional, so I learned a lot.

What do you think about the current situation of Japanese cinema?

I’m not an expert but I have the impression for filmmakers it is continuously getting worse and worse.

Which three Japanese films from the last decade do you think everybody should see?

Sad Vacation
Tokyo Sonata
Pecoross’ Mother and her Days

Do you have an all-time favorite film, and if yes, is there a particular reason why it’s your favorite?

Kigeki: Tokudashi – Himo tengoku, 1975, directed by Azuma Morisaki – a masterpiece!

Who is the director/filmmaker that influenced you the most?

Azuma Morisaki

Have you ever been to Germany before, and if so, what was your favorite/strangest/funniest experience?

I went to Nippon Connection 2012. The beer was delicious and I had the impression that German people lead good lives.

Translated from the Japanese.

The Tokyo University of the Arts: Shorts segment will be shown on Saturday, May 27, at 14:45 in the Naxoshalle theater.
