In today’s final Guest in Focus interview (no worries, more will come tomorrow!), we hear from the director of Come On Home To Sato, Yoshiki SHIGEE.

When and how did you first get into filmmaking?
When I was 24, in my film school classes.
What were your first film projects?
I filmed people that I knew, “freeters” who left school after middle school, hikokomori, former drug addicts.
Where did you get the idea for Come On Home to Sato, and what story would you like it to tell?
I felt that people in society do not look very happy, and I thought society would become a little bit brighter when people would feel the energy of the children in Kodomo no sato through the screen. What I most want to convey is that children have an immense power, and the connections between people.
Were there any funny or difficult situations you experienced during the shooting?
It was great to meet the children. It was difficult to balance this film with work that pays my bills.
What do you think about the current situation of Japanese cinema?
It’s a shame there are so few occasions to see documentary films.
Which three Japanese films from the last decade do you think everybody should see?
Come On Home to Sato, The Targeted Village, In This Corner of the World
Do you have an all-time favorite film, and if yes, is there a particular reason why it’s your favorite?
Forrest Gump. I admire people who are as generous as Forest.
Who is the director/filmmaker that influenced you the most?
Shohei IMAMURA
Have you ever been to Germany before, and if so, what was your favorite/strangest/funniest experience?
I was astonished and full of respect when I saw how the history of war crimes committed by Germans is dealt with, without hiding anything, in the middle of the city.

映画作りを始めたのはいつ頃ですか。どのようなきっかけでしたか 。
24才頃。専門学校の授業で。
最初の映画プロジェクトはどのようなものでしたか。
中卒のフリーターや引きこもり、元・薬物中毒の知人を撮影していました。
『さとにきたらええやん』のアイディアはどこで得たものですか。また、その映 画の中で、監督が表現しようとしているのは、どのようなストーリ ーですか？
社会にいる人があまり幸せそうに見えないなと感じていて、スクリーンを通してこどもの里の子ども達のエネルギーに触れる事によって少し社会が明るくなるのではと考えたから。主に意識して伝えたかったのは、子ども達はすごい力を持っているという事と、人間同士の繋がり。
撮影中で経験された面白かった出来事や、難しかった出来事は？
面白いのは子ども達に会える事。難しかったのは食べるための仕事との両立。
日本映画の現状についてどう思われますか。
ドキュメンタリーが観られる機会が少なく残念。
ここ１０年の日本映画のなかで、必ずみてほしい三本は？
『さとにきたらええやん』『標的の村』『この世界の片隅に』
一番好きな映画がありましたら教えてください。また、その理由は なんですか。
『フォレストガンプ一期一会』 フォレストのような懐の深い人間にあこがれます。
これまで一番影響を受けられた監督・映画人は誰ですか。
今村昌平監督
ドイツに来られたことはありますか？もしありましたら、一番好き な・変な・面白い経験はなんでしたか。
街の中心部に、ドイツの人たちが犯した戦争犯罪の歴史を隠すことなく堂々と設置している事に驚きと尊敬の念を覚えました。
